St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters - Doodle for Hunger XI

lead story

Food For Thought
A new year is upon us...and while 2019 promises to be another event-filled year for St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, we wanted to take a moment to recognize 2018 as another incredible year for our organization and the clients we serve. Thank you all for helping us make it happen - we couldn't do it without you!

Our impact could be felt in a big way as we distributed baby clothing, formula, diapers, winter coats, clothing, household items and toys. In addition, we provided hundreds of personal hygiene kits, more than 1,000 backpacks with school supplies, tens of thousands of cases of food and over 100,000 PB&J sandwiches (across dozens of corporate-sponsored PB&J Days)!

Our big annual fundraisers were a big success, too: our Broadway Theatre Event, the competitive-but-fun Golf for Hunger & Pool Party, the inspiring Women of Valor Awards Tea, the always-fun Doodle for Hunger and our cutthroat-in-a-good-way Texas Hold 'Em & Casino Night. Thanks to all of our corporate partners, celebrity guests and supporters and the legions of volunteers that make events like these possible. And we'll do it all again in 2019!

While smaller in stature, but no less important, our regular community events are really what reaches the clients that benefit from our fundraising efforts. And while the 'spirit of giving' is an important sentiment to us year-round, it's even more so during and leading up to the holiday season.

While monetary donations and donated products or services can have a tremendous impact on St Francis Food Pantries, volunteer programs have as great a value. Our PB+J program in 2018, for instance, totaled 150,000 sandwiches made and distributed. That’s a lotta lunches!

Throughout last Thanksgiving season, our Annual Turkey Drive & Distribution program was extremely successful, thanks to the efforts of so many people. More than 6,000 turkeys were delivered to the more than 45 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters we help support.

In what’s become somewhat of an annual tradition for both of us, the week before Thanksgiving, volunteers from Macy's partnered with St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets for our clientele. These baskets were filled with all of the fixings for a delicious holiday meal, which we then distribute to a number of locations.

Before the hectic pace of the holidays arrived, Con Edison employees planned something special for our young clients, and spent their afternoon hosting a Children's Arts & Crafts Party at St. John the Baptist Church in Manhattan.
