St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters - Doodle for Hunger XI

lead story

Food For Thought
Spring is eagerly celebrated by St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters each year. In addition to a welcome change in season, everyone enjoying and looking forward to warm weather, and a renewed sense of purpose, we anticipate both annual happenings…as well as some new ways to help more than 10,000 poor families in the New York area.

In general, employees of Macy's are always an amazing and consistent cadre of volunteers…and purveyors of some fine PB&J sandwiches! This spring, however, as part of the 21st Annual Macy's Bag Hunger Campaign, they truly outdid themselves when it comes to the number of volunteers participating, and the number of sandwiches made!

Celebrated news journalist Ernie Anastos recently spent the morning at the Museum of the City of New York with the Amber Charter School for an important, fun and interactive project, featuring Anastos’ very own children’s book, "Ernie and the Big Newz – The Adventures of a TV Reporter.”

Recently, St Francis purchased 1,000 boxes of cookies from the Girl Scouts – specifically Madeline O’Connor and Sydney Barnes, the latter teaming up with her two cousins and fellow Girl Scouts Leah Alfred and Rachel DeSouza – who in turn spent a day helping distribute them at two different food pantries. (As a special surprise, the recipients of a week's worth of staple food were also treated to a box of Girl Scout cookies!)

As part of Macy’s 21st Annual Bag Hunger Campaign, a couple dozen employees from various Macy’s departments volunteered to help assemble food- and treat-laden Easter Baskets that were then distributed to needy students at the Lorraine Hansberry Academy in the Bronx as well as seniors at the Carter Burden Senior Center in East Harlem.
