Food For Thought
Rising food prices are forcing New Yorkers struggling to feed themselves and their families to rely more on food banks and pantries. U.S. inflation has hit its highest level since 1982, eroding consumers’ purchasing power and exacerbating the food insecurity crisis that existed even well before COVID-19 swept through the city. Demand for charitable food remains greater than pre-pandemic levels.

Senior citizens are often hit hardest by these events and fluctuations, and it just so happens they're the clientele most served by St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters.

According to a survey by the Senior Citizens League, inflation has caused half of seniors to burn through emergency savings. Nearly half — 48% — have had to visit a food pantry or apply for food stamps. More than two-in-five — 44% — have run up credit card debt to get by, trading rip-off interest rate payments tomorrow so they can have food and meds today. And 23% need help with their energy bills.

It is a very painful time for a lot of people. How can you help?
